From the Source to the Plate

Since joining Trident Seafoods in 2006, we control every step in the making of our Louis Kemp surimi seafood products — from the harvesting of Alaska pollock by our own fishing boats, to processing at our state-of-the-art facility in Motley, Minnesota, all the way to your plate.

Commitment to Sustainability

With over 45 years of experience fishing the cold, icy waters off the coast of Alaska, our commitment the responsible fishing practices runs deep. Wild Alaska Pollock is one of the best studied fisheries in the world, is certified by the Marine Stewardship Council and Responsible Fisheries Management, and is managed based on robust, sound science, and transparent governance. We actively participate in the federal fisheries management processes and actively support research and management decisions that keep our fisheries thriving. On the grounds, Trident works cooperatively with our Captains and regional trade associations to ensure that we harvest our Wild Alaska Pollock with low levels of incidental catch. Our harvesters use cutting edge technology to locate and target schools of Wild Alaska Pollock and use tools like excluders and cameras to avoid non-target species, such as Chinook salmon. All vessels carry federal fisheries observers that collect catch data and ensure that catch quotas are not exceeded. In our plants, we have exceeded industry norms through our work to design a third-party accredited social standard for our processing facilities.

How we catch Wild Alaska Pollock

We harvest Wild Alaska Pollock in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska using a mix of Trident’s own vessels, like the Kodiak Enterprise, as well as more than 40 independently-owned vessels. Catcher processors process the fish onboard and catcher vessels deliver to one of our shore-based facilities in Akutan, Kodiak, or Sand Point (and sometimes to one of our partner’s plants). Regardless of where it is processed, our captains and plant managers are in constant communication with each other to ensure that we have the freshest fish possible. Most Wild Alaska Pollock is harvested with midwater trawls, which have zero contact with the ocean floor. Our captains use the latest technology, combined with decades of on-the-water experience, to target large schools of Wild Alaska Pollock, which allows them to avoid incidental catch. In fact, the Wild Alaska Pollock fishery is one of the cleanest fisheries in the world, with less than 1% of the catch being made up of incidentally caught species.
